Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpel tunnel syndrome is a condition of the hands and wrists that can cause weakness, numbness, pain and a tingling sensation in the fingers. It is widely linked to exposure to repetitive movements of the wrists and hands. It may also be caused as a result of using vibrating tools at work over a long period of time.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is more common in women than in men and it can occur at any age.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a result of numerous factors that increase the pressure on the tendons and median nerve in the carpal tunnel, which is made up of small bones in the wrist that form a narrow channel. Some of the most common occupations where workers are at greatest risk of developing this condition include grocery store checkers, butchers, carpenters, assembly line workers and people involved in sewing.
Common Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel:
- Pain
- Tingling sensation in the fingers
- Loss of feeling in one or more fingers
- Weakness of the thumb and/or hands for a long period of time, perhaps even permanently
- A swollen feeling in the wrist, even if the wrist is not swollen
